Sneakers for Scholars Program

TAKIF’s Sneakers For Scholars Program recognizes the many that are less fortunate and how feeling good about one’s self can lead to better performance on and off of school grounds.

Working hand-in-hand with the New York C ity Public Education System and our corporate sponsors, we will seek to provide the tools necessary for many to be successful.

Teen Pregnancy Awareness & HIV Initiative

Statistics:

In-depth look revolving around evidence and data:

The New York City Department of health and Mental Hygiene’s (DOHMH) teen pregnancy prevention strategy is guided by two principles:

*Choosing not to have sex is the surest way to avoid unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs); and

*If teens are sexually active, young men should use condoms and young women should use hormonal/long-acting reversible birth control every time they have sex. Sexually active teens should get regularly tested for STIs.

We know what works to prevent teen pregnancy – comprehensive sex education, evidence-based youth development programs and access to community and school-based reproductive health services, including contraception. DOHMH’s teen pregnancy prevention activities include:

*Implementing Comprehensive sex education in middle and high schools, in partnership with the Department of Education.

*Supporting the provision of service-learning youth development programs.

*Providing training and technical assistance to health care providers in community and school-based health centers (SBHCs) to ensure access to sexual and reproductive health services, including contraception.

*Linking students in high schools without SBHCs to community health centers

*Strengthening school health resource rooms and the School Condom Availability Program

*Providing nurse home visiting to low-income, first-time teen mothers through the Nurse-Family Partnership, a program which delays subsequent pregnancies and increases high school graduation and employment.

*Conducting ongoing surveillance to monitor and understand trends in teen sexual activity and pregnancy.

*Advocating policy changes that increase public funding and support for sexual and reproductive health services.

These statistics lead TAKIF! to believe often youth in the areas where education and awareness may be minimal often times struggle to understand the wealth of knowledge that if that is necessary to make healthy choices. For that cause, TAKIF! initiated our Teen Pregnancy Awareness Initiative with the overall goal being to reduce the number of youth having children prematurely.

Our Mission: To assure that youth are equipped with the necessary knowledge that will enable them to make better, more educated, conscious decisions regarding early sexual practices- ensuring less premature teen pregnancy instances.

Our Commitment: TAKIF! will accomplish this mission by providing the educational tools necessary to prevent early teen pregnancy.

Education & the Arts

*Educating our youth on the various forms and techniques of art utilizing the assistance of the renowned artists from all over the world that are affiliated with Reconstruct Art.

*Providing youth with the Educational and Art tools and supplies needed to be both productive and successful.
